Biographical Note

Dr. Louis Norris, after serving as professor of philosophy and academic dean of DePauw University, became the ninth president of MacMurray College in 1952. As his academic career began, Norris received his license to preach from the Ohio Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1926 and spent the next ten years in school to reach his doctorate.

Norris served the college for eight years, during which time MacMurray became co-educational as the first class of men entered in 1957. To accomodate the men, two residence halls were erected at the very south of the campus - Blackstock and Norris; students nicknamed this area "down campus." As president, he stressed the significance of the church-related colege and the best method for educating women to prepare for careers in the last half of the twentieth century.

Priorities for Norris while president consisted of reorganization of the internal structure of the college to distribute more decision making to the faculty, and upgrading the academic tone of the college by adding graduate courses in special education for the hearing and visually-impaired.

Norris married Florence Harris on June 4, 1931 and they had two daughters, Martha Ellen and Joann. Norris left the college in 1960 when he accepted the presidency of Albion College in Michigan. He died in 1986.
