Biographical Note

Clarence McClelland was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York in 1883. He was the son of Judge Charles P. McClelland and Janette Meta Babcock McClelland, who were well educated. Because of this President McClelland received an excellent education, the first of eight presidents to do so. He was educated at a private school for boys, the Westminster School and at Centenary Collegiate Institute, Hackettstown, New Jersey. He had opportunities to enjoy culture and travel to Europe with his father during summer vacations. After completing his secondary education he worked at Mutual Life Insurance for four years.

In 1903 he entered the Methodist ministry and enrolled in Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. After his graduation from Wesleyan in 1907, he entered Drew Theological Seminary, from which he received his Bachelor of Divinity in 1910. In 1920, Syracuse University conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Sacred Theology. From his Alma Mater he received the degree of Doctor of Divinity, and from Illinois Wesleyan that of Doctor of Laws.

In 1910, he married Mary E. Adams of Philadelphia and a graduate of Goucher College. The two had met as members of the same choir. Dr. McClelland became president of MacMurray College, then known as Illinois Woman's College, in 1925. He served until his retirement in 1952. He is responsible for the expansion of the college, which includes MacMurray Hall (1928), Jane Hall and McClelland Dining Hall (1930), Rutledge Hall (1937), Pfieffer Library (1941), Kathryn Hall (1947), and Merner Chapel (1949).

He served as president of the Morgan County Historical Society and the Illinois State Historical Society. During his retirement years he continued to write and publish for both societies.
