Director of Music to make music in Macedonia
Laurie Lewis to travel overseas with Rotary group.
The Rotary Club of Jacksonville is sponsoring Laurie Lewis, director of music at MacMurray College, as part of the Rotary District 6460 Group Study Exchange (GSE) ambassador team to Macedonia.
The trip is a cultural exchange for young professionals that will help them in their careers. The exchange lasts four to six weeks. Lewis will be particularly focused on exchanging ideas on the performance, interpretation and education of music.
She will also be performing a solo recital in Macedonia's capital city of Skopje. “The Macedonian team is currently in Jacksonville, and, after meeting them, I'm even more excited than I already was about the experience,” said Lewis. “I'm humbled and honored to be a part of this first-ever Rotary GSE between the United States and Macedonia.”
"We are excited to have found a good partner for our exchange program in the form of MacMurray College,” explained Ryan Byers, president elect of the Jacksonville Rotary Club. “This is the second consecutive year that we have had a member of the MacMurray family earn a spot on our GSE team, and the Jacksonville Rotary Club is excited to be sponsoring Laurie Lewis as our representative on this year's Group Study Exchange. In only two years on campus, Laurie has done some great things for the music department at Mac, including significantly growing the choir, expanding the curriculum, and reestablishing a minor in music. If she can accomplish these sorts of things at MacMurray, we have no question that she will also excel as part of the GSE program."
The Rotary Foundation’s GSE program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.
