Social work spring break trip
Seven students choose alternative trip to St Louis.
In honor of March as National Social Work Month, seven students from MacMurray’s Social Work Program took a three-day, alternative spring break trip to St. Louis.
March 11-13, MacMurray College partnered with Centenary Methodist Church in St. Louis, which runs a shelter and social services center for the homeless called The Bridge. The social work students spent a majority of the trip helping prepare food, serve meals to the homeless, study social service delivery and discuss social justice issues.
The students also visited two master’s programs in social work, visited a domestic violence services agency, took a tour of a substance abuse counseling agency, and also met with a social worker from Beardstown who now practices in St. Louis. They also had fun visiting St. Louis landmarks such as Ted Drewes ice cream parlor.
Joe Squillace, MSW, assistant professor and director of the Social Work Program, also went on the trip. “This trip is an outstanding way for students to make new friends, have fun, and yet develop a better sense of the various practice areas within the profession,” said Dr. Squillace. The Spring Break trip allows for the integration of the College’s key principles of knowledge, service and faith.”
Students attending the trip were: Rachelle Dennis of Jacksonville, IL, daughter of Emmett and Dee Givens, of Jacksovnille; Ashley Sanders of Jacksonville, IL, daughter of Scott and Charlotte Greer of Chapin, IL; Brooke Lovekamp of Arenzville, IL, daughter of Bruce and Penny Lovekamp of Arenzville; Bethany Hillman of Jacksonville, IL, daughter of Steve and Cheryll Hillman of Groveland, IL; Anna Ruppel of Jacksonville, IL, daughter of Tim and Kelly Ruppel of Jacksonville; Sammy Petefish of Ashland, IL, daughter of R.L. and Holly Petefish of Ashland; and Dawn Gartner of Scales Mound, IL, daughter of Deb Gartner of Scales Mound, and the late Russ Garter.
