MacMurray to exhibit St. Louis artist

Travis Russell brings graphic arts-based style to the Applebee Gallery.

JACKSONVILLE, IL – The Applebee Art Gallery at MacMurray College brings St. Louis artist Travis Russell for a solo show this month. An opening reception will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at the Gallery, located in the Putnam/Springer Center on the corner of State and Clay streets on the MacMurray campus. A gallery talk will be at 6:15 p.m.

 The show, “Due to Lack of Interest, Tomorrow will be Canceled” investigates how movies, graphic novels and popular art forms work as backdrops for visual narratives. Drawing from the history of graphic style, he relies heavily on the visual images that index the complexities of modern life.

 A recent recipient of the 2012 Creative Stimulus Grant from the Regional Arts Commission in St. Louis, Russell has exhibited at The Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis; several St. Louis private galleries; the Lexington Art League in Kentucky; the DIY gallery, Los Angeles; the Louisiana State University School of Art in Baton Rouge; and the Lump Gallery in Raleigh, NC.  After the opening, the show can be viewed 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday through March 29. The reception and subsequent exhibition is free and open to the public.
