Speakers Series to focus on women's athletics

December 3, 2012

JACKSONVILLE, IL – In the wake of the U.S. women’s Olympic team’s strong showing in London earlier this year and during this 40th anniversary of the landmark legislation that made discrimination based on gender illegal, Amy Wilson will explore the law's turbulent history and will offer insights to the ongoing challenges of attaining gender equity in intercollegiate athletics.

Her talk, “Title IX after 40 Years: perspectives on the struggle for gender equity in educational sport,” will be 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Thoresen Recital Hall in the Putnam/Springer Center on the MacMurray College campus. The event is free and open to the public and is part of the 2012-13 MacMurray Speakers Series, Perspectives on Social Justice.

Ms. Wilson is a women’s sports advocate who has presented and written extensively on the effects of gender discrimination in women’s sports. She was a 2009 recipient of the Administrator of Tomorrow Award by the National Association of College Women Athletics Administrators. She recently published a report for the NCAA titled, “The Status of Women in Intercollegiate Athletics as Title IX Turns 40,” which was sent to all athletic directors and senior woman administrators in the country.
