Nursing attends Advocacy Day

April 30, 2012

JACKSONVILLE, IL – The MacMurray College Nursing Department took all the senior nursing students and several faculty to Springfield, IL on Tuesday April 24, 2012 to participate in an Advocacy Day.

For the 14th Annual INA (Illinois Nurses Association) Student Nurse Political Action Day, more than 1,000 nursing students gathered in Springfield. Students participated in the action day to learn about the legislative process and how it affects nursing practice.

Mac students participated in various political activities throughout the day, including talking with legislators, a poster presentation, and a march to the state’s capitol. Nursing students also spent the day networking and learning more about the field of nursing.

“Along with providing holistic care to clients, families and communities, advocacy and social justices are two major skills that our accrediting body expects BSN graduates to embrace,” said Georgine Berent, associate professor of nursing. “Participating in INA’s Political Action Day allows students to understand, examine, and assess how our political system works and to question and evaluate how their voices and principles are heard.”
