MacMurray places high in national ranking

August 29, 2011

MacMurray College was ranked No. 14 in the Washington Monthly magazine’s 2011 annual rankings of baccalaureate colleges in the country. According to the September/October issue, available today, the rankings are intended to measure how much a college or university gives back to the country.

To gauge that effect, the magazine based its rankings on such criteria as social mobility, research and service. The magazine uses several measures to gauge these three criteria. For social mobility, as an example, the magazine determines a college’s admissions of low-income students and its ability to help those students achieve their degrees.

MacMurray is the only college in Illinois in the top 50 among baccalaureate colleges, with relatively high rankings in the “service” category. For this criterion, the magazine looked at the percentage of federal work-study funds spent on service, at community service participation, plus other measures.

Washington Monthly’s ranking of MacMurray as No. 14 in the nation among baccalaureate colleges, reflecting how much the college ‘gives back to the country,’” said MacMurray President Colleen Hester, “underscores MacMurray’s commitment to prepare students to serve the United States of America and our Land of Lincoln.”

Other baccalaureate schools that placed in Washington Monthly’s Top 20 are Tuskegee University in Alabama (No. 1), Cooper Union in New York City (No. 2), and Northwestern College in Iowa (No. 3). Washington Monthly also ranked schools in other categories, such as liberal arts colleges, national universities and master’s universities.
