Alum takes over men's golf team

Derek James begins this fall his first year coaching the MacMurray College menís golf team. His other duties include womenís golf coach and assisting menís and womenís basketball.

"I am very excited to take over a team that I once played for,Ē said James. ďThis is a great opportunity for myself and my future golfers to build and succeed on and off the course.Ē

A two-sport student-athlete at MacMurray, James received numerous conference honors, including two-time, all-conference selection in menís golf. He was also the individual conference champion in 2003. Throughout his golf career at MacMurray, James was selected as the teamís MVP, team captain and was a four-time tournament champion, as well as Jacksonville City Champion in 2004. He also received all-Midwest region honors.

James was also a three-time, all-conference selection in menís basketball at MacMurray. He received most valuable player honors, was his teamís captain, and was listed in the collegeís Top 10 all-time for scoring, assists, steals, and points. James continues to hold the title as the all-time career three-point leader at MacMurray. He also was a member of the only NCAA Tournament team at MacMurray.

ďDerek is a great fit to move the Highlander golf team up the standings in our conference,Ē said MacMurray Athletic Director Dane Pavlovich. ďHe has tremendous knowledge of the game, and he understands the role of the student-athlete at MacMurray.I am very excited that Derek is expanding his role within the athletic department with this appointment.Ē

In 2009, James was inducted into the MacMurray College Athletic Hall of Fame. Along with his coaching responsibilities, he has also been the head golf professional at Northridge Hills Golf Course in Jacksonville during the past five years.
