Derek James leads golf program.
Derek James begins this fall his first year coaching the MacMurray College men’s golf team. His other duties include women’s golf coach and assisting men’s and women’s basketball.
"I am very excited to take over a team that I once played for,” said James. “This is a great opportunity for myself and my future golfers to build and succeed on and off the course.”
A two-sport student-athlete at MacMurray, James received numerous conference honors, including two-time, all-conference selection in men’s golf. He was also the individual conference champion in 2003. Throughout his golf career at MacMurray, James was selected as the team’s MVP, team captain and was a four-time tournament champion, as well as Jacksonville City Champion in 2004. He also received all-Midwest region honors.
James was also a three-time, all-conference selection in men’s basketball at MacMurray. He received most valuable player honors, was his team’s captain, and was listed in the college’s Top 10 all-time for scoring, assists, steals, and points. James continues to hold the title as the all-time career three-point leader at MacMurray. He also was a member of the only NCAA Tournament team at MacMurray.
“Derek is a great fit to move the Highlander golf team up the standings in our conference,” said MacMurray Athletic Director Dane Pavlovich. “He has tremendous knowledge of the game, and he understands the role of the student-athlete at MacMurray.I am very excited that Derek is expanding his role within the athletic department with this appointment.”
In 2009, James was inducted into the MacMurray College Athletic Hall of Fame. Along with his coaching responsibilities, he has also been the head golf professional at Northridge Hills Golf Course in Jacksonville during the past five years.
