Choral group to perform in Virginia
MacMurray Women’s Ensemble to sing for annual Schaeffer concert.
The MacMurray Women’s Ensemble will perform 2 p.m. Palm Sunday, April 17, at the Virginia United Methodist Church, 401 E. Broadway, for the annual Judy Schaeffer Memorial Concert. The event is free and open to the public.
The 12-voice MacMurray Women’s Ensemble will sing a selection of secular music -- “The 1960s: Music that Defined the Decade” -- as well as sacred music, including: “Festive Sanctus” by John Purifoy; “A Prayer with Psalm,” by Lew Songer; and Schubert's “Ave Maria.”
The concert is in honor of Julia Lee ("Judy") Schaeffer, a Virginia native born in 1918, who lived most of her life in town. She led the Virginia United Methodist Church Choir for 25 years and brought musical taste and enthusiasm to all she did and for everyone she knew.
She passed away in March 2010; the following month, friends and family created a fund to sponsor concerts by the MacMurray College Choir in her memory. This is the second annual celebration of Schaeffer’s legacy in music.
