Highlanders Win SLIAC Service Award
May 27, 2014
The MacMurray College Athletic Department and the MacMurray Student-Athlete Advisory Council (S.A.A.C.) were awarded the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Council’s inaugural SLIAC-SAAC Community Service Award Tuesday, May 20, during the 3rd Annual SLIAC Awards Banquet held at the St. Louis Soccer Park in Fenton, MO.
The Highlanders earned the award by collecting the most canned food items and cash donations throughout the 2013-14 season. The collections were held at select fall, winter and spring athletic contests. This year’s food drive was designated by the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference SAAC representatives as the conference community service project, and all 10 SLIAC schools were encouraged to participate.
MacMurray College, which was in second place after the fall and winter collection dates, pulled ahead after the spring collection date and collected 1,076 cans during the year. All of the donated cans were delivered to the Jacksonville Area Community Food Center for distribution to needy families in Jacksonville. The SLIAC conference collected 4,237 cans in total throughout the food drive.
The Highlanders were presented with the 2013-14 Community Service Award, as well as a traveling trophy, which will displayed at MacMurray throughout the 2014-15 season.
“This award is a result of a group effort by our Student-Athletic Advisory Council, our athletic department staff, our generous faculty and staff, and all those who made donations on behalf of Highlander athletics,” said Athletic Director Scott McClure. “We set the standard in the first year of this service project, and we’re going to work even harder next year to make sure that trophy stays at MacMurray College.”
