MacMurray appoints academic leader

March 15, 2013

MacMurray College has appointed James R. Maxwell as vice president for academic affairs and student life.

He has extensive managerial experience at several universities, holding the positions of dean and department chair. He is presently the department head and professor of the Industrial Technology Department of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

“The work of the vice president of academic affairs and student life is central to the mission of transforming students’ lives at MacMurray College,” said MacMurray President Colleen Hester. “Dr. Maxwell brings talents, productivity, leadership and entrepreneurial skills to the College. I look forward to working with Jim and our community, advancing MacMurray College.”

In his new position at MacMurray, Dr. Maxwell will have broad and extensive responsibilities. He will be the chief academic officer of the College and is responsible for all aspects of academic affairs.

He will work with MacMurray’s faculty and division chairs to promote the advancement of teaching and learning at the College, facilitate curriculum offerings and oversee campus support services, which include the library and the Center for Learning Excellence.

In addition, he will coordinate the already strong retention efforts on campus and will orchestrate records and registration and will be in charge of academic reporting for MacMurray.

He will also be in charge of the extracurricular activities on campus, including the Office of Student Life and intercollegiate athletics,

“I am excited to be a part of the MacMurray College community,” he said. “I feel truly privileged to have this opportunity to join a caring community with rich opportunities for involvement with faculty, staff, students and alums,” he said. “I look forward to meeting each and every member of MacMurray College and the leaders in the Jacksonville community. Go Highlanders!”

He will arrive on campus in early June, taking over the position from John Bailey, who is retiring in May after serving as vice president since August 2011. The College launched a national search for the position, attracting more than 40 applications and extensively interviewing three finalists on campus. Dr. Maxwell was the unanimous choice of the search committee and received the strongest positive feedback from the campus community after numerous group and public meetings during the interview process.

In his illustrious and varied career in academia, Dr. Maxwell has been an effective change agent, who has led feasibility studies and implemented new degree programs, and raised funds to build technology programs and a new technology center. He has led curriculum review efforts at several institutions of higher education, and has overseen the articulation agreements with other colleges in Iowa.

He entered the academy in 1999, serving as the chair and professor of the Business Department of the State University of New York Buffalo campus. Since then, he served as a professor of the College of Technology at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, ID; chair and professor of the Visual Communications and Technology Education Department at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH; and dean and professor of the College of Business, Technology and Communication at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, MN, before going to Northern Iowa State.

Before his academic achievements, he had a successful career in the private sector. He was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Toshiba, Inc. in St. Charles, MO and, before that, held numerous managerial positions with Emerson Electric Company in St. Louis, rising to regional vice president.

Dr. Maxwell has a strong publishing record, with 10 peer-reviewed papers and one book in print, and he has won several awards for teaching, scholarship and innovation. He received his bachelor’s in management/marketing from Maryville University and a master’s in business administration, also from Maryville. He holds two Ph.D.s, one from Webster University in management and the second from Indiana State University in technology management.
