Configure Your Computer for the MacMurray Network - PC
- Click on “Start” > “Settings” > “Control Panel.” Note: In some versions of Windows, the “Control Panel” setting can be found directly under the start menu.
- Double click on the “Network and Dial-up Connections” control panel. Note: In Windows, there are two views: Category and Classic view. If you are operating in the “category” view, click “Switch to classic view” on the left to display the “Network Connections” control panel. Double click to open it.
- In the “Network Connections” window, right click on the “Local Area Connection” icon and select “Properties.”
- In the “Components checked are used by this connection:” area, scroll down until you see “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).”
- Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and click “Properties.”
- Verify that you have the computer set to “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically.”

- Click on “System Preferences” on the Dock menu.
- In the “System Preferences” window, click on the “Network” button under the “Internet and Network” heading.
- Highlight the “Built-in Ethernet” option and click the “Configure” button.
- Select the “TCP/IP” tab; verify that the “Configure IPv4” pull-down menu is set to “Using DHCP.”
Obtain a Machine MAC and IP Address - PC
- Click on the “Start” button and select “Run.”
- Type “cmd” or “command” (no quotes) and hit Enter.
- When the black DOS screen appears, type “ipconfig /all” (no quotes) and hit Enter.
- The MAC address is listed as “Physical Address.”
Obtain a Machine MAC and IP Address - Mac
- Click on “System Preferences” on the Dock menu.
- In the “System Preferences” window, click on the “Network” button under the “Internet and Network” heading.
- Highlight the “Built-in Ethernet” option and click the “Configure” button.
- Select the “TCP/IP” tab; your IP address will be displayed here.
- Select the "Ethernet" tab; your MAC address is listed here as "Ethernet ID."
Release and Renew an IP Address - PC
- Click on the “Start” button and select “Run.”
- Type “cmd” or “command” (no quotes) and hit Enter.
- When the black DOS screen appears, type “ipconfig /release” (no quotes) and hit Enter.
- Type “ipconfig /renew” (no quotes) and hit enter.
A successful release is indicated when the IP address reads 0.0.0.0. A successful renew is indicated when the IP address reads 10.6.x.x (if a computer has already been registered through port authentication) or 10.13.x.x (if a computer is still in the network registration process). If your computer has been quarantined for a virus or shut down through a policy violation, your IP address will read 10.12.x.x. If your computer is not configured properly it may return a 192.168.x.x number and you may need to contact the IT Department for assistance.

Clear out Temporary Files, History, and Cookies - Internet Explorer
- While Internet Explorer is open, click on the “Tools” menu and select “Internet Options.”
- Under the default “General” tab, click “Delete Cookies,” and click “OK.”
- Click “Delete Files.” Check “Delete all offline content,” and hit “OK.”
- Click “Clear History.”
- Click “OK” to close.
Note: Clearing these files may clear any usernames and passwords that are automatically entered for you at certain web sites.
Clear out Temporary Files, History, and Cookies - Firefox
- While Firefox is open, click on the “Tools” menu and select “Clear Recent History.”
- Click on the arrow next to "Details" and check all the options you would like to clear. You may also choose how far back to delete.
- Click "Clear Now."
Note: Clearing these files may clear any usernames and passwords that are automatically entered for you at certain web sites.
Clear out Temporary Files, History, and Cookies - Safari
- While Safari is open, click on the “Edit” menu and select “Empty Cache.” This will clear your temporary files.
- Click on the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences."
- Go to the "Bookmark" tab and click the "Show Cookies" button. You may opt to delete certain cookies or remove them all at once from this screen.
- Click on the "History" menu and select "Clear History."

Turn Off Windows Firewall
- Click on “Start” > “Settings” > “Control Panel.” Note: In some versions of Windows, the “Control Panel” setting can be found directly under the start menu.
- Double-click “Security Center.”
- Click “Windows Firewall.”
- Select the “Off” option.
- Click “OK.”
Change Your Campus Password - PC
- Open Windows Security by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete. Note: If this opens the Task Manager instead of Windows Security, then take the following steps.
- Open the Control Panel.
- Click "User Accounts."
- Click "Change the way users log on or off."
- Uncheck the box labeled "Use the welcome screen for fast and easy logon."
- Click "OK."
- Click "Change password."
- In the "User name" field, type your Mac username (your email address without the "@webmail.mac.edu" portion).
- In the "Log on to:" field, type MAC.
- Enter your old password and your new password.
- Click "OK."
Change Your Gmail Password
Once logged in to Gmail, you can click the Settings link at the top-right of your Gmail page, then choose the Accounts link in the middle of the orange section. The third entry is Change Account Settings: Google Account Settings. Once you click that, you can find the change password link next to Security in the center of the page.
Uninstall P2P Software - PC
Most P2P software can be uninstalled by simply going to the add/remove programs section of your computer and uninstalling the application. To do so, go to:
Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
After you reach this box, simply find the program in question and click on it, then select uninstall and complete the process.
In some cases you will have to take additional steps to delete the software from your computer in order to pass the security scan. WinMX is one of those cases. If you have WinMX installed on your computer, you will have to perform the following steps:
- Go to Start > All Programs > WinMX and click on Uninstall.
- After the uninstall process completes click on Start > Run.
- Type regedit in the Run box that pops up and click OK. This will open the registry editor. PLEASE NOTE: Editing the registry can be VERY dangerous. Please do not edit or delete anything except what are in these instructions. If you are uncomfortable with the following steps please call the IT Department at 7032 for assistance.
- Left click on My Computer and in the menu bar across the top under Edit click on Find.
- In the Find box type in winmx and hit enter.
- Right click and delete any reference to winmx that may come up. An easy way to find the next reference is to hit F3 on your keyboard to Find Next after you find the first reference.
Once you have uninstalled any P2P software that was detected by the security scan and taken any additional steps needed to remove them please rescan your computer to continue the registration process.
Find a Game Console's MAC Address
Nintendo DS
To obtain the MAC Address from a Nintendo DS, you must first insert a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection compatible game and access the WFC Setup Utility. Please note that the exact steps to access the setup utility varies by game. However, the setup utility is a standard menu, included with all WFC-compatible games.
After accessing the utility, tap "Options," then "System Information."


The MAC Address and Nintendo WFC ID will be listed on the screen. Unless the game player has successfully connected with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the WFC ID will be blank.

Gamecube
To locate the MAC address for your Nintendo Gamecube:
- Unplug the Gamecube and flip it over.
- Remove the broadband adapter from the bottom of the console.
- The MAC address will be printed on the underside of the adapter.
Nintendo Wii
To locate the MAC address on your Nintendo Wii:
- On the opening screen, select Wii Options in the lower left.

- Select Wii Settings.

- Select Internet on the second page of the System Settings menu.

- Select Console Information.

- Your MAC address will be displayed here.

PlayStation2
To find the MAC address of your Sony PlayStation 2 you will need the Network Adapter connected to the PS2 and you will need the disc that came with the Network Adapter. Then follow these steps:
- Power up the PlayStation 2 and load the Network Adapter Startup Disc.
- Once it has loaded, select "ISP Setup" and press X on your controller.
- The ISP Setup will begin to load, and you will be presented with a license agreement. Select Agree and press X to continue.
- For connection type, choose "Local Area Network (LAN)" and press X to continue.
- Select "Automatic Configuration" and press X to continue.
- At the connection test screen, select "Advanced" and press X to continue.
- At the "Advanced Broadband Settings" screen, make sure "Automatic" is selected. While you are at this screen, make note of the MAC address at the bottom.
Some of the PS2 games also have the ability to list your MAC address, but the above steps are the IT Help Desk's preferred way of finding the MAC.
PlayStation 3
To locate the MAC address on your PS3:
- Navigate to the Settings menu.

- Select System Settings.

- Select System Information.

- Your MAC address will be displayed here.

PSP
To find the MAC address of your PlayStation Portable (PSP):
- Navigate to "System Settings".

- Then navigate to "System Information".

- The MAC address will be located here.

XBox
To find the MAC address of your XBox:
- Turn on your Xbox console with no game disc in the disc tray.
- From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Xbox Live.
These steps assume you cannot connect to Xbox Live until you finish configuring your Xbox console to use your PC's MAC address. Therefore, you should receive the following message: "Could not connect to Xbox Live. Do you want to troubleshoot your network connection?". - From the Connect Status screen, select Settings. The 12-digit number at the bottom-right corner of the Network Settings screens is the MAC address of your Xbox console. Do not change your Xbox console MAC address, just write it down.
XBox 360
To locate the MAC address of your Xbox 360 console:
- Go to the System area of the Xbox Dashboard and select Network Settings.

- Select Edit Settings.

- From Additional Settings, select Advanced Settings.

- At the bottom of this screen you'll see a heading called Wired MAC Address.
