The MacMurray College men’s soccer team improved in several areas as they continue to grow and gain experience. The Highlander roster contained no seniors and only two juniors this year, but a strong group of sophomores and freshmen. Overcoming inexperience was the theme of 2012, and the team did exactly that.
The Highlanders finished the season with a 5-12-1, which included 5 games (4 conference games) that were lost by one goal only.
“Our team demonstrated great resiliency this year as we were learning about ourselves and each other. Although this year was frustrating in some ways, it was very constructive in many ways. We watched an almost entirely new backline emerge into a stiff and cohesive defense. Towards the end of the year, we witnessed how effective sophomores Mason Rowe and Connor Winking can be in the middle of the pitch. Last, we know we still have work to do, but we are very close to becoming a top four conference team. We demonstrated this by the close games we were in this year, and with no seniors on the 2012 team, we are only going to move forward and become stronger next year,” said head coach Shane Taylor.
Earning SLIAC honors were freshman goalkeeper Zachary Richter and Bradley Wise. Richter earned the Honorable Mention All-Conference Award and Wise earned the All-Sportsmanship Team Award.
“We are in a good position going into next year. We learned how to handle adversity and grew together as a team,” added Taylor. If we dedicate ourselves to working every day to improve as individuals and as a team, we will be right in the conference hunt in 2013.”
The Highlander men’s soccer team begins their 2013 campaign at Northland College on August 30, 2013.
