The MacMurray College baseball team battled SLIAC opponent Fontbonne University in a pair of 3-2 losses in the season-ending doubleheader for the Highlanders.
Coach Justin Fuhler's club outhit the visiting Griffins in the doubleheader and the Highlanders' seniors shined on Senior Day at Don Timm Field.
Senior lefthander Anthony Willeford tossed a complete game and struck out nine in the final start of his collegiate career. Willeford allowed only four hits and only one unearned run in the game.
Senior centerfielder Derek Crouch hit a two-out double in the final inning to cut the Griffins' lead to 3-2. Aaron Krummrich, who went 2-4 in the game, lined out to left field to end the game.
The Highlanders outhit Fontbonne 5-4 in the game and also got hits from Jake Walch and Ison Smith.
Senior right-hander Jake Columbia also pitched a solid game in his final collegiate start for the Highlanders. Columbia allowed three unearned runs on six hits in 7.2 innings. He fanned four and walked three. Senior lefty John Brockhouse, Jr., closed out the game for the Highlanders and did not allow a hit in 1.1 innings of relief.
The Highlanders also had six hits in the game and were led by Alec Quandt (2-4) and Jeremy White (2-4). Krummrich went 1-4 and batted in a run; and Mike Raines went 1-3 and scored a run.
Senior infielder Brayden Johnson made a bid for a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth, but his two-out drive to right field was caught at the fence.
The Highlanders end the 2014 season with a 12-27 overall record and 7-20 SLIAC record.
