The MacMurray College softball team split a pair of SLIAC conference games Thursday evening at Principia College. The Highlanders dropped the first game 4-3 and bounced back in the second game with a 9-0 win in six innings against the Panthers.
Coach Lexy Determan's club scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning in game one; but the Panthers came back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth enroute to the win.
Freshman pitcher Michala Swanger took the loss allowing four runs on eight hits. Swanger fanned eight hitters and walked two. She also went 1-4 at the plate and batted in one of the Highlanders' three runs. Breezy Walton went 3-4 with a 2-run double in the fifth and a runs scored. Tiffany Hazelwonder went 2-3 and scored a run in the loss.
Kendyl Cummins went the distance on the mound in the second game and allowed only two Principia hits while striking out four. Swanger went 4-4 at the plate with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored. Daerial DeGroot was 3-4 with a double and scored three runs; Jenalee Stine went 2-4 with a double and three RBI; and Mika Morgan went 2-4 with two runs scored and a home run.
The Highlanders are now 9-16 overall and 5-7 in SLIAC play. They'll host Westminster College on Saturday in another conference doubleheader. Game #1 at Palmer Field will start at 1PM. It will aslo be Senior Day on Saturday.
