The MacMurray College baseball team opened up SLIAC league play Monday afternoon with an 11-9 comeback victory over Principia College at Lenz Field.
Senior centerfielder Derek Crouch went 5-5 with two doubles and a game-winning two-run home run in the seventh that broke a 9-9 tie. Crouch drove in three runs and scored three for the Highlanders.
Aaron Krummrich got MacMurray on the scoreboard with a two-run double in the bottom of the first. The Highlanders lost leads of 6-3 and 8-4 and trailed 9-8 after six innings against the Panthers.
Austin Jones pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win and Connor Kurrle notched his third save of the season. Kurrle allowed a lead-off single and a walk in the top of the ninth and then struck out the side to earn the save and preserve the win.
Dallen Russell paced Principia offensively with a 5-5 performance at the plate. Russell had two doubles, two home runs and four RBI for the Panthers. Gavin Thomas took the loss on the mound.
The Highlanders improve to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in SLIAC play; while Principia falls to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in league play. MacMurray College will play a SLIAC doubleheader tomorrow at Principia College; with the first game starting at 5 p.m.
