Five weeks ago, the MacMurray College women's basketball team lost to Spalding University in Louisville by 45 points (73-28). On Monday night, the Highlanders came close to pulling off an upset of epic proportions in an 85-75 overtime loss to Spalding U.
Megan Duisen scored a game-high and season-high 24 points to help fuel the upset bid. KayDee Carmody added sixteen points and six rebounds; and Emily Riddle had fifteen points and seven rebounds.
Coach Derek James' club led by as many as eight points in the first half and went into the locker room tied at halftime (28-28). The Highlanders battled back from an 8-point deficit in the final minutes and forced overtime when Carley Prince sank two huge free throws with .5 seconds left on the clock.
Spalding's Jessica Guy took over in the overtime period to spoil MacMurray's upset bid. Guy finished the game with a team-high 23 points and a game-high nineteen rebounds. Kerstin Hayes added 21 points and Dee Dee Slider chipped in with thirteen points.
The visiting Golden Eagles improve to 13-9 overall and 13-3 in SLIAC play; while the Highlanders fall to 3-20 overall and 2-14 in league play.
MacMurray College will be on the road this Saturday at Fontbonne University and will close out the 2013-14 season next Tuesday at home against Iowa Wesleyan College.
