Highlanders lose heartbreaker at home against Blackburn College
January 9, 2014
In a battle of two teams fighting for their first SLIAC conference win of the season, visiting Blackburn College overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat MacMurray College 74-69 Thursday night in Wall Gymnasium.
Coach Derek James' club took a six-point lead (39-33) into the half and started strong in the second half to extend their lead; but foul trouble and late-game turnovers allowed the Beavers to rally late for the win.
Freshman guard KayDee Carmody had a team-high and career-high nineteen points to lead the Highlanders. Junior center Megan Duisen added twelve points; and senior guard Gabby Douglas added eleven points, six rebounds and five assists. Freshman forward Carley Prince pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in the loss.
Blackburn College was led by Ciara Morgan's game-high 22 points and eleven rebounds; and Shelby Smith added nineteen points and four assists.
Blackburn improves to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play; while the Highlanders fall to 0-9 overall and 0-3 in SLIAC play. The Highlanders will travel to Louisville, Ky., tomorrow and play Spalding College Saturday afternoon in another league contest.
