The MacMurray College basketball teams are designating their Nov. 20 games as fundraisers for Toys for Tots, the local effort by former U.S. Marines to give less fortunate children in Jacksonville a happier Christmas.
For the men’s basketball team’s first home game against Knox College on Nov. 20, representatives of the local chapter of the Marine Corps League will be on hand to collect new, unwrapped toys at the entryway to Bill Wall Gymnasium. Donations will also be accepted during a half-time presentation, when MacMurray College students will be passing collection buckets in the stands.
The game is free and open to the public. Tipoff is at 7 p.m., and fans who bring a toy donation to the game will receive a free bag of popcorn. Wall Gym is housed in the Education Complex, which is located on the east side of the MacMurray campus.
At the same time across town, the MacMurray women’s team will be playing Illinois College at Sherman Gymnasium in the Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center. Details about this Toys for Tots fundraiser will be announced by the Illinois College Athletic Department.
The local Toys for Tots effort, led by the West Central Illinois Leathernecks Marine Corps League Detachment #1177, is in its 33rd consecutive year, and all proceeds go to benefit local children age 2 to 16.
Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community. Last year, the local organization made Christmas brighter for more than 600 area children and their families. The primary goal is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope that will assist the recipient in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.
Toys for Tots is a national effort by former Marines. For more information, please visit www.toysfortots.org.
