Volleyball team makes the grade

August 8, 2013

The MacMurray College volleyball team has earned an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVAC) Team Academic Award for the 2012-2013 season.

The award, which began in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that display excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. The MacMurray squad had a 3.3 average for the 2012-13 academic year.

The AVCA Team Academic Award has become one of the Association’s fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years.

MacMurray was one of 93 Division III award winners last year, a new record of teams awarded. In all, 622 high school and college teams earned the Association’s academic award this year, which once again broke the previous year's total of 536 and sets a new all-time high for this award.

More than 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's 20-year history, with exactly 5,450 awards given out in total.
