Slagle Shines as Highlanders Win Season Opener

November 16, 2013

The MacMurray College men's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a hard-fought 72-71 victory over Rust College (Miss.) Saturday night in the first game of the Webster University Cavallo Classic Tournament in St. Louis, Mo.

Senior forward Brady Slagle (Winchester, Ill./West Central) paced the Highlanders with a game-high 24 points and sixteen rebounds.  Slagle also led the squad in assists (4) and added three steals and two blocks.  His second block came in the final seconds on Kwamere Gredic's shot that would've given the Bearcats a lead.

Gedric led Rust with 21 points and Andrew Birks added 15 points for Rust.  Birks hit three key three-point field goals late in the game as the Bearcats rallied from a 64-50 deficit in the final eight minutes of the game.

Coach Todd Creal's club got its last field goal with 4:35 left in the game on Clayton Whitlock's basket and they scored their last two points at the 3:50 mark on free throws by James Williams.

Slagle's monster game was complimented by Spencer Pratt's thirteen points, Whitlock's eleven points and five rebounds, and Dylan Burton's ten points.

The Highlanders (1-0) are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they face Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in the Webster University Cavallo Classic Tournament.
