January 23, 2013
The Highlander men’s basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss against Webster University on Wednesday, January 23rd, 64-63 at home.
MacMurray entered into the night’s contest in a second place tie with Webster in the SLIAC standings. In the first half, MacMurray came out fast and dictated the momentum of the game. The Highlanders took advantage of Webster’s seven turnovers in the half and were able to execute inside leading 31-28 at halftime.
MacMurray continued to lead the Gorloks in the second half. With just over ten minutes to go, the Highlanders pulled away, leading by 13 points. However, late turnovers and a couple of key fouls let the Gorloks sneak back into the game. Webster was able to execute outside the paint in the second half going 7-16 in three point shots. A late turnover caused the Highlanders to lose possession and trailed by a point. Mac simply ran out of time and was unable to regain the lead. This unfortunate loss by Mac left them in a three tam tie for third place in the SLIAC standings.
Sophomore Clayton Whitlock led in scoring and rebounding with 24 points and 11 boards. Senior Luke Bishop chipped in with 10 points and sophomore Dylan Guthrie tallied six steals.
The Highlanders will have multiple opportunities to recover from this loss as they welcome in many significant conference opponents in the next couple of weeks. The team will play Westminster College at home on Saturday, January 16th for 3:00pm game. Both MacMurray and Westminster carry a 6-3 record in conference play.
